The Terrestrial Planets: Similarities and Contrasts
Though often grouped together, the terrestrial planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars—are strikingly diverse beneath their shared rocky surfaces. This presentation will explore the internal structures they have in common, alongside the crucial differences that have shaped each planet’s evolution across billions of years. From molten cores to tectonic activity and atmospheric retention, we’ll uncover how these characteristics influenced planetary development and habitability.
About Steve: Astronomy Enthusiast and Community Educator
Steve, who has spent most of his life in East Grinstead, is the driving force behind the popular Facebook group Above East Grinstead. Passionate about bringing astronomy to the community, he gives engaging talks across local schools, groups, and at the Open Arms pub, where he presents monthly—often followed by stargazing sessions. He also organises the town’s well-attended annual International Observe the Moon Night, with a special focus on inspiring younger audiences. A staunch advocate of naked-eye astronomy, Steve sees it as the perfect entry point into the cosmos, a philosophy clearly reflected in his outreach. Outside of astronomy, Steve proudly wears many hats: devoted grandad, dedicated Churchwarden, and loving cat companion.
