Using Smart Telescopes for Astrophotography
There is a revolution in astrophotography, and it’s called the Smart Telescope. For under £600 you can purchase a complete imaging system comprised of a camera, tracker and telescope and it’s all controlled by an app. Some even have a wide-angle lens for photographing the Milky Way. Should you invest in a smart telescope for astrophotography or continue using your camera. If you live with light polluted skies, you may be surprised at what is possible with these cheap systems. The photograph used to promote this workshop was taken with a Seestar S50 for 2 hours from a light polluted site and processed by the telescope. Lilian will guide you through the pros and cons of what is achievable with a smart telescope and why you may not want to give up your camera now.
Speaker – Dr Lillian Hobbs
Dr Lilian Hobbs FRAS ARPS is a passionate and engaging astrophotographer with over two decades of experience capturing the night sky from her garden near Southampton. Renowned for her clear and enthusiastic communication, she’s become a familiar face at astronomy and photography clubs, inspiring audiences with her insights. Lilian is at the forefront of a revolution in astrophotography through her work with Smart Telescopes—affordable, app-controlled systems that make deep-sky imaging accessible, even from light-polluted areas. In her workshops, she offers practical guidance on the pros and cons of these innovative tools, helping others explore their potential without necessarily abandoning traditional cameras.
A Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and Associate of the Royal Photographic Society, Lilian’s work has been featured on the BBC’s Sky at Night. Her observatories are home to an array of cutting-edge equipment, including Dwarflab and Seestar Smart Telescopes. Unafraid to experiment, she shares advice on using everything from gimbals to GoPros for astro imaging, making her a trusted voice in the field. She has also authored several astronomy books, always striving to demystify the cosmos for newcomers and experienced enthusiasts alike.
